I. The Federalists Era 1788-1800 A. The federalists have incredible advantages. A.1. Constitution A.1.a) There was great support for the constitution A.2. George Washington A.2.a) People were afraid of a king or tyrant, but everyone had confidence in George Washington. He was of renowned character, integrity, courage. The constitution was ratified with the comfort that George would get in as president. A.3. Economy A.3.a) It begins to prosper and get better, and as a result the people believe that the constitution’s passing is what betters the economy. A.4. Precedents A.4.a) George Washington set in place the patterns of behavior in the government that have continued to today: (A.4.a.1) A strong cabinet was a established. Perhaps the most excellent people in the cabinet ever. (A.4.a.1.a) The Dept. Of State –Thomas Jefferson (A.4.a.1.b) The Dept. Of Treasury – Alexander Hamilton (A.4.a.1.c) The Dept. Of War – Knox (A.4.a.1.d) Attorney General – Randalph (A.4.a.1.e) Chief Justice – John Jay (A.4.a.2) He retired after serving two terms. He was concerned that it would be a bad habit for someone to inhabit the office for a long time. So he retired after two terms. This was very admired. This became a pattern followed by every president until Roosevelt. And then, the 22 nd amendment limits the term to this very precedent established by Washington.
