Movie review: Take This Hammer The movie recorded in the spring of 1963 for author and activist James Baldwin when he was driven around San Francisco to meet with members of the local African-American community. His trip was escorted by Youth For Service’s Executive Director Oriville Luster and he realized that “The real situation of Negroes in the city, as opposed to the image of San Francisco would like to present…There is no moral distance between the facts of life in San Francisco and the facts of life in Birmingham. Someone’s got to tell it like it is. And that’s where it’s at.” As I see from the movie, there is a lot of scene about frank exchanges with local people on the street, meeting with community leaders and extended point-of-view sequences. When James Baldwin was expressing his conviction that: “There will be a Negro president of this country but it will not be the country that we are sitting now.” Also, the movie shows a black guy described his own experience that he was put into jail because

Even though it seems a bit ridiculous, these expression fully reflects on the racial inequality that African-Americans are forced to confront and at one point tries to lift the morale of the other black people. The prejudice that the black were experienced was based on the long term history of oppression to the black by the white. In order to change the situation, the black needs a leader to organize, inspire, and lead them in an efficient but peaceful way to fight back for their valueless social status. However, in my opinion, violence is not a good way to solve these problems. The black needs a more powerful, educational way to let people realize the living condition of the black in the society and brings a nationwide influence of equalizing human rights between different races.
