Linda Martinez TPP 7 Thesis: Decriminalizing Drugs Non-Empirical Mayor Schmoke thinks that we should treat using illegal drugs as we treat cigarette- smoking as a potentially harmful habit that requires education but not punishment. Smoking kills 300,000 people every year, but we have made the treatment of smoking a health problem not a criminal problem, so therefore the number of people smoking continues to decrease. Empirical Drug traffickers care very little about the sanctions of the criminal justice system. Since they normally view going to jail as a business expense; drug dealers fear one another more than they fear law enforcement because fellow drug dealers will kill them, it’s a competition; drug dealers are willing to bear any risks including legal punishment and also the risks of murder, extortion, and kidnapping of fellow drug dealers. Decriminalizing would take the profit out of the drugs and greatly reduce or eliminate the drug related violence. Taking the profit out would have a detrimental impact on those who are
