1 Lee Jane Lee Professor Gilson DOC 1, Section A08 9 October 2009 Ethnic Diversity: A Different Outlook for a New Nation In A New Race? , Arthur Schlesinger Jr. focuses on the United States’ breaking of cultural norms in order to establish a new kind of nation, one that is made up of people from all over the world. Ethnic diversity makes this country unique and he, therefore, characterizes it as a “distillation of the multifarious planet”. He begins with a quote from Thomas Paine that highlights the idea of beginning the world over again and then underscores the national motto of never looking back but, instead, focusing on the future of the United States. He then emphasizes the creation of a “smelting pot”, a metaphor for America’s ability to welcome those of different backgrounds to form a “new race” of people that embody the essence of the various cultures of the world. By defining a timeline of this country’s many historical events and by quoting notable Americans, Schlesinger is able to portray the formation of such a multifarious people. His work is divided into seven parts.
