1 Lee Jane Lee Professor Brown COHI 100, Section A12 Final Exam 1. World of Warcraft is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game in which players create character avatars and control them to learn new skills, defeat monsters, complete quests, etc. A game’s formal elements include the players, objective, rules, and boundaries. In World of Warcraft, the players can choose to play against one another or against the environment. The first option involves open combat while the other involves defeating monsters and completing quests. The objective of the game is to develop a character’s skills and abilities and also to gain experience points, items, and in-game money. To play the game, one must create a character and choose a server to play in. Then, the characters level up by questing and running instances. Like other games, World of Warcraft has a barrier between the real world and the game. The players are separate from their characters in this fantasy world, unlike alternative reality games. Although formal elements may seem obvious, they provide structure and outline the fundamentals of the game. Dramatic elements engage players in the outcome and describe why the game is fun. These elements include the challenge, play, characters, and story. Learning new professions and gaining new skills within the game are parts of the challenge. There is a constant reward in World of Warcraft as players gain points and advance to higher levels in the game. The player can control the character’s destiny, so the incentive to develop and learn new skills is ongoing. Playing the game involves exploring the world within the game, acquiring different skills, and

Much of the game’s story is told through quests and the characters’ actions. The constant challenges and rewards from conquering them keep the game interactive and enjoyable. System dynamics and economies make up the emergent elements in a game. System dynamics determine the game’s flow and how it is played. So, the way players interact with one another and the environment affects the game’s outcome and the rewards that the characters will receive. Because World of Warcraft has an unfolding plot with multiple ways to develop one’s character, it is considered a network. The economy of this game is simple. Characters are rewarded tokens and honor points after competing in battlegrounds. These can be used to buy armor, weapons, and other items that help them along the way. When the structure of the game meets the incentive to play, emergent elements are formed. In World of Warcraft, the characters are categorized into ten different races and are either
