1 Lee Jane Lee Professor Brown COHI 100, Section A12 19 October 2010 Week 4 Reading Summary In the introduction for The Social Construction of Reality , Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann explain how reality is socially constructed, meaning that society defines and creates what we call “reality”. According to their studies, we, as human beings, contribute knowledge to society and ultimately produce a reality in which we live in and follow. The device we can use to analyze this idea is called the sociology of knowledge. In their introduction, Berger and Luckmann explain that reality and knowledge are related to each other. As an example, they state that “what is real to a Tibetan monk may not be real to an American businessman” because one’s reality is constructed by one’s knowledge. Because the two individuals have different experiences and knowledge, they construct their own reality and define it as their own.
