Krishna Shankar Pandey, MBA-LSCM (Sem II, 2010-12) M aterial Handling Equipments (MHE) is mechanical devices for handling of supplies with greater ease and economy. It is the equipment which relates to storage, movements, protection and control of materials, products and goods all through the procedure of manufacturing, distribution, disposal and consumption. Material-handling equipments can be used to reduce labor-intensive material-handling operations. It is utilized to increase output, control cost and maximize the productivity. Lifting equipment includes any equipment used at work for lifting or lowering loads, including attachments used for anchoring, fixing or supporting it. These cover a wide range of equipment including, cranes, fork-lift trucks, lifts, hoists, mobile elevating work platforms, and vehicle inspection platform hoists. MHE can be classified into the following five major categories- 1. Transport Equipment: Equipment used to move material from one location to another (e.g., between workplaces, between a loading dock and a storage area, etc.). The major subcategories of transport equipment are conveyors, cranes, and industrial trucks. Material can also be transported manually using no equipment. 2. Positioning Equipment: Equipment used to handle material at a single location so that it is in the correct position for subsequent handling, machining, transport, or storage. Unlike transport equipment, positioning equipment is usually used for handling at a single workplace. Material can also be positioned manually using no equipment. 3.
