Chapter 39: Gynecology Gynecology - the branch of medicine that deals w/the health maintenance and the diseases of women, primarily of ht reproductive organs. Obstetrics - the branch of medicine that deals w/the care of women throughout pregnancy. Gravida (G)- is the # of pregnancies a woman has had. Para/Parity (P)- refers to the # of deliveries a woman has had. Most Common Emergency Gynecological complaints Abdominal pain o Dysmenorrhea - painful menstruation o Dyspareunia - painful sexual intercourse. Vaginal bleeding -IUD’s recommended insertion time rarely exceeds 2years -In the female patient of childbearing age, always document the Last Menstrual Period. Physical exam Assess Patient for evidence of vaginal bleeding or discharge. Do NOT perform an internal vaginal exam in the field. Management Do NOT pack dressings in the vagina. General management of GYN emergencies is focused on Supportive care. Specific Gynecological Emergencies
