Nathan Ellis December 9, 2004 AP History Chapter 20 Timeline Year Event 1850 The Compromise of 1850 – Later, Northerners would go to Kansas, and South got pissed cause they thought it was going to be a slave state, and the more Northerners that came in, the more anti-slavery attitude was in the population, which would in turn determine if it was a slave state or not. 1852 Harriet Beecher Stow publishes Uncle Tom’s Cabin which was a popular book that made the North even more pissed about slavery because it showed the evils of it in this book. This book sold millions of copies and helped prevent Britain from joining in the civil war. 1855 Election!! Tons of Southerners went to Kansas to try to pass the state into being a slave state. 1856 Proslavery people started violence in Lawrence, and caused more trouble. 1856 A super-abolitionist was nuts. His name was John Brown and led a group of people to Pottawatomie Creek and killed a few proslavery poop-heads. This was really weird because usually abolitionists were pretty pacifistic and soft. 1857 Kansas gets enough people to become a state!!! The proslavery population created the Lecompton Constitution.
