Ions ↔ Formula (Charge Balance) Ex1: Al +3 and O -2 ; let x = subscript of Al +3 and y =subscript of O -2 Values of x & y must be such that net charge = 0 x Al +3 ions * (+3/ion)+ y O -2 ions *(-2/ion) = 0 so 3* x – 2 y= 0 so x/y = 2/3 Al 2 O 3 Verify 2*(+3) + 3*(-2) = 6 -6 = 0
3 Review: Formulas and Names (2) Go by Class of Compounds A. Ion Based (cont.) - 1. Ions ↔ Formula (again) (Charge Balance) (cont.) Ex2: (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 (go backwards) Using sum charges = 0 means 2*NH 4 charge + 1* CO 3 charge =0 Rearrange NH4 charge/ CO3 charge = - 1/2 NH 4 is first (cation) so (+) charge (+1 ) then CO 3 is anion (-) charge (-2).
