Descriptive Statistics 2

Mathematical Statistics Stat 1008 equipped you with a set of descriptive tools which helped you understand a restricted class of data structures. In a sense these tools were presented in the form of a black box. What lies within is called Mathematical Statistics and at the heart of it lies the dark art of Probability. 3

Theory vs Reality Models are an idealised representation of reality Statisticians use models to approximate reality Unlike the magazines, the best statistical model is one which approximates reality the closest but don’t forget they are still idealised representations of the real world! Statistical tests and statistical models are constructed from tools developed in Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics Mathematical Statistics deals with the theoretical world rather than with reality, thus this course does not concern itself with data but rather the mathematics that underlies each theory. 4

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
