Stat 1008 equipped you with a set of descriptive tools which helped you
understand a restricted class of data structures. In a sense these tools were
presented in the form of a black box.
What lies within is called Mathematical Statistics and at the heart of it lies the
dark art of Probability.

Models are an idealised representation of reality

Statisticians use models to approximate reality

Unlike the magazines, the best statistical model is one which
approximates reality the closest but don’t forget they are still
idealised representations of the real world!

Statistical tests and statistical models are constructed from tools
developed in Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics
•
Mathematical Statistics deals with the theoretical world rather than
with reality, thus this course does not concern itself with data but
rather the mathematics that underlies each theory.
