Method Subjects were presented with the following scenario: "Imagine that the United States is preparing for an outbreak of an unusual Asian disease, which is expected to kill 600 people. Two alternative programs to combat the disease have been proposed. Assume that the exact scientific estimate of the consequences of the two programs are as follows:" GROUP 1 IS PRESENTED WITH FOLLOWING: "If Program A is adopted, 200 of these people will be saved." "If Program B is adopted, there is a 1/3 probability that 600 people will be saved, and a 2/3 probability that no people will be saved." GROUP 2 IS PRESENTED WITH THE FOLLOWING ALTERNATE VERSION: "If Program A is adopted, 400 people will die." "If Program B is adopted, there is a 1/3 probability that nobody will die, and a 2/3 probability that 600 people will die." Subjects are then asked "Which program should be adopted?" B. Results: GROUP 1: 72% of the subjects selected Program A, 28% selected Program B. GROUP 2: 22% of the subjects selected Program A, 78% selected Program B.
