The two main characters struggle to survive, lookingfor work after Lennie got the duo into trouble by foolishly trying to touch a lady's dress. The ladytried to run away, but Lennie kept holding on to her dress, out of fear. Eventually, the lady ranaway after George smacked Lennie, causing Lennie to let go of the dress. The lady ran away andtold others, claiming she had been raped. Lennie and George ran away in order of avoidingLennie getting into serious trouble, over an accusation that was completely false.The duo end up finding a ranch and finding work. No less than about a week later, thereis already trouble. Lennie is scolding one of the ranches puppies for getting itself killed. Becauseof Lennie’s power, it is commonly believed that he killed the puppy by crushing its skull whilepetting him, which is common with the mice he also pets. Curley's wife walks into the barn andoffers her hair as something to pet. Lennie accidentally breaks her neck and accidentally kills her.Knowing that the people working on the ranch would get mad at him, he goes to hishideout. George finds Lennie in the hiding spot George instructed him to go to when he is introuble. George is acting weird, and tells Lennie about their dream of living on a farm andtending to rabbits. Right after, George shoots Lennie in the back of his head, ending his life.The ending of this novella leaves the reader to question if it was okay for George to shootLennie. The end was justified because there is no other way for Lennie to return to a normal life.
