Liliane Lagarda Castro Case Study: Tourism as an ally in the fight to save Petén The case study talks about a big natural problem that is happening in the region of Petén in Guatemala. Petén is a geographical area located in the northern of Guatemala which in pre-Columbian Mesoamerican periods many centers, ruins and beautiful sites of the Mayan Culture were built. Nowadays, Petén is suffering from environmental and conservation problems and damages among its forests. During a conference of the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, DC. Eduardo Cofiño, who is a specialist in conservation, talked about the problem in this region and suggested that the tourism could be a very good weapon to save this place and slow the environmental degradation.
