Homophobia: fear and hatred of homosexuality. It shares many of the same roots with other prejudices. Like racism and anti-Semitism, homophobia includes an intolerance toward otherness; a fear of lives, perspectives, and practices that one doesn't understand;and a visceral desire for a social hierarchy that puts some people on the social rungs below themselves.
