Biological explanations Racial inequality stems from genetic racial inferiority. Explaining racial disparities 1. Biological explanations NO evidence to support this. There is NO biological basis for race. The five racial groups were developed in the 18 th century as taxonomic system and biologicized in the 19 th century The "racial" worldview was invented to assign some groups to perpetual low status, while others were permitted access to privilege, power, and wealth. AAA statement on race 2. Culture of poverty Idea that supposedly deficient characteristics of the groups themselves (i.e., moral background, family forms) are passed down through generations and cause poverty. These theories ignore the structural factors that restrict opportunities in these communities. 2. Culture of poverty-Little evidence of this resignation in low- income neighborhoods.-Many of the characteristics considered cultural are better explained by structural factors. 3.
