Characteristics of Workers’ Compensation Plans Jessica Thibodeaux Workers Compensation programs were established to protect both the employee and the employer. When a worker gets hurt on the job, the employer must have workers compensation insurance to cover the employee or there could be legal action taken. The four federal workers compensation plans include: The Federal Employees’ Compensation Program, The Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Program, The Federal Black Lung Program, and The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program. The Federal Employees’ Compensation Program covers on the job injuries to individuals that work for the federal government. The Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Program covers employees of the maritime field. The Federal Black Lung Program covers Coal Mine workers in the event of injury on the job. The Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program covers employees that work

These plans are important to ensure that all workers, in all fields are will receive workers compensation for on the job injuries that result in the individual not being able to work. The state workers compensation plans vary from state to state as each state has the ability to administer compensation to individuals. One of the state workers compensation plan pays for medical expenses related to a work related injury while the other plan pays lost wages to the employee while he or she is unable to work. Both the Federal plans and the state plans are necessary to ensure the employer maintains a safe work environment for employees. Before the plans were available employees would pursue legal assistance to get compensated for injuries and now employers are required to have workers compensation to cover injuries that result from accidents and death on the job....
