Required Berry (ed.), Blessed are the Peacemakers (Shoemaker & Hoard) Dostoevsky, Notes from the Underground (Norton) Knox (ed.), Norton Book of Classical Literature (Norton) Shakespeare, Hamlet (Norton) Recommended Davies, Europe: A History (Harper) Grout, History of Western Music (Norton) Janson, Janson’s History of Art (Prentice Hall) Euripides, Heracles and Other Plays (Penguin) Pindar, The Odes (Penguin) EXAMINATIONS Two tests and a final examination will comprise your entire grade. The first test, which is scheduled for Tuesday, October 4, will cover The Iliad , The Odyssey , The Aeneid , and Pindar’s odes. The second, scheduled for Thursday, November 3, will cover lectures on the heroic in art, Beethoven’s Third Symphony (the Eroica ), and Dostoevsky’s Notes from the Underground . The final will cover all remaining works. It
