Lecture 9 09/27/11 Books 1-4 Bildungsroman – development of character and morals, childhood Focus on Telemachus, Odysseus’s son. Penelope, Telemachus’s mother, is pursued by suitors, oikos . The motivation for all the adventures is a need to get back home Books 5-12 The adventure material Book 6- best illustration of the culture of hospitality. Odysseus does run into other mortals that treat him well- Knox illustrates the way they treated him the best. Books 13-24 Nastoi – The focus of Odyssey. Return home to Ithaca (a complicated process, not simply physical return). It is the key thing we focus from beginning to end. The return is a rejection of all of the magic that surrounds him on his journeys. A rejection of immortality, role of gods …etc. part of which involved his love but also proving himself. Book 23 – A lot of material. Recognition scenes. Testing of Odysseus (Penelope suspects a trick from gods so she needs to make sure it’s really him). Odysseus as the main character Odysseus is shown as a cunning strategist (resembles comic heroes, Picaro). Achilles straightforwardness vs. Odysseus’ capacity of changes. Odysseus is similar to folkloric heroes. The world in which Odysseus travels if very different from Achilles’ world (monsters, irrationality). Achilles wouldn’t have survived in Odysseus’ world. This changes the attitude toward Odysseus’ values (which is questionable in the Iliad but much more positive in the Odyssey) Odysseus always appears as a loner and wanderer. Odysseus’ recklessness , improvisation is hugely important for him. He finds himself in unique circumstances for which no one has experience. Picareseque hero - from Picaro; Italian term for a hero who goes from problem to problem as the chapters pass by, you must read on to see how they get themselves out of these jams. Epithet- Odysseus the great strategist. These epithets are attached sine he figures out the best way to approach the princess rather than acting on impulse. Odysseus is wishing the princess the best kind of oikos possible. He says something about his own desire to go home (nastoi). The princess speaks to him in the language of the culture of hospitality. It begins with an affirmation of Odysseus’ identity. He plays many roles throughout his lifetime. He is the father of Telechamus, king of Ithaca, Penelope’s husband…etc. These identities have to be reestablished. We begin with the affirmation in Troy as the great warrior, then terrible journey across Mediterranean Sea. He has been gone for so long that people forget about him. And in book 23 he reaffirms himself and his identity. Key issue is the affirmation and reaffirmation of his identity. This marks the low point of his
