Math 25: Advanced Calculus Days: Monday through Thursday Time: 10:00am -- 11:40am Place: Bainer 1128 ''A student's first encounter with analysis has been widely regarded as the most difficult course in the undergraduate mathematics curriculum. This is due not so much to the complexity of the topics as to what the student is asked to do with them. After years of emphasizing computation, the student is now expected to be able to read, understand, and actually construct mathematical proofs.'' -- Steven R. Lay in the preface to Analysis: with an introduction to proof Instructor: Sonya Berg Office: MSB 3206 Office hours: Tuesday and Thursday 9:00am -- 9:50am, and by appointment. (You may also email questions and I will try to respond.) Email: sonya@math.ucdavis.edu Web page: http://www.math.ucdavis.edu/~sonya/25 Material : In this class you will begin to learn how to write beautiful proofs in the subject of advanced calculus (ie. the theory of calculus, or real analysis). Our goal is to cover Chapters 1 and 2 from Elementary Analysis: The Theory of Calculus
