Unformatted text preview:
 Homework
Assignment
1
‐
Answers

 Psychology
60
 Spring
2010
 1. (4
points
total)
Define
the
following
terms

 a. Population:
the
population
is
the
set
of
individuals
whom
we
are
interested
in

 b. Sample:
a
sample
is
a
set
of
individuals
selected
from
a
population

 c. Parameter:
a
parameter
is
some
characteristic
of
a
population
 d. Statistic
:
a
statistic
is
some
characteristic
of
a
sample

 2. (2
points)
Explain
the
relationships
between
a
sample
and
a
population
 A
sample
is
a
set
of
individuals
sampled
from
a
population
that
we
use
to
 characterize
the
population
in
some
way.
We
want
a
sample
to
be
 representative
of
a
population
so
that
we
can
use
it
to
determine
what
is
going
 on
in
the
population.

 3. (2
points)
Define
the
concept
of
sampling
error.

Be
sure
that
your
definition
includes
the
 concepts
of
statistic
and
parameter.
 Sampling
error
refers
to
the
difference
between
a
sample
statistic
and
a
 population
parameter.

 4. (2
points)Why
is
random
assignment
important
in
an
experiment?
 Random
assignment
to
groups
in
an
experiment
means
that
at
the
start
of
an
 experiment,
before
any
manipulation
has
occurred,
the
groups
will
only
differ
 due
to
chance
(to
sampling
error).

 5. (2
points)
Define
Independent
and
Dependent
variables.

 The
independent
variable
in
an
experiment
is
the
variable
that
is
manipulated.
 The
dependent
variable
in
an
experiment
is
the
variable
that
is
measured.

 6. (2
points)
Come
up
with
a
simple
operational
definition
of
“happiness”
 Many
possible
answers.
Some
examples:
number
of
times
a
person
smiles
in
an
 hour,
the
number
on
a
scale
from
1
to
10
a
person
indicates
when
asked
how
 happy
they
are,
number
of
seconds
a
person
laughs
in
response
to
a
joke.

 (answer
just
has
to
make
sense
and
be
something
that
one
could
 argue
indexes
the
construct
of
happiness)

 7. (5
points
total)
For
each
of
the
following,
identify
what
scale
of
measurement
each
is
on
 (nominal/ordinal/interval/ratio)

 a. Number
of
days
an
individual
goes
to
the
gym:
Ratio
(1/2
point
for
interval)
 b. How
tall
a
person
is:
Ratio
(1/2
point
for
interval)
 c. What
political
party
an
individual
identifies
with:
Nominal
 d. What
color
shirt
an
individual
is
wearing:
Nominal

 (Full
credit
for
ordinal
if
it
is
explicitly
argued
that
 color
indexes
wavelength
in
the
electromagnetic
 spectrum)

 e.
