Nathan Ellis April 26, 2005 AP US History 1900-1920 Terms 1900 Election –McKinley is assassinated and TR is VP to get him out of any sort of strong political position… whoops! Progressivism – Group of people who hated monopolies, corruption, inefficiency and social injustice. Their main battle was to strengthen the state – to use the government as an agency of human welfare. Sierra Club – Founded in 1892 dedicated itself to preserving the wildness of the western landscape. Square Deal - The three C’s: Control of the corporations, Consumer protection, and Conservation of natural resources. Hepburn Act - Free Passes - More effective than the Elkins Act, the Hepburn Act, free passes were severely restricted. The ICC was expanded and became more effective than ever before. Elkins Act – Rebates - This was aimed to end the rebate of railroads. Heavy fines could now be imposed both on the railroads that gave rebates and on the shippers that accepted them. Coal Strike – 1902 – 140,000 miners demanded a 20% pay increase and a shortened work day. Meat Inspection Act - Passed in 1906, this act decreed that the preparation of meat shipped over state lines would be subject to federal inspection from corral to can. Pure Food and Drug Act – Designed to prevent the adulteration and mislabeling of foods and pharmaceuticals. Newlands Act – Passed in 1902, the Newlands Act authorized the government to collect money from the sale of public lands in the western states and use the funds for the development of irrigation projects. National Parks - The general American public assumed that their natural resources and land were
