Name_________________________________ Section________________________ PHYS 1200 Circuits Interactive Lecture Demonstration - Student Worksheet A) We will work our way through the idea of solving a simple circuit together. The overall goal: Find the current i and find the equivalent resistance of the two resistors in this circuit. We will take this step by step. i) Starting at point A and going clockwise, write the loop equation for the sum of the potential changes around the loop. ii) Determine the current i by solving for it in the potential loop equation. (It will be in terms of Emf, R 1 , and R 2. iii) Solve for the effective resistance of the two resistors together by using Emf=iR effective . B) Consider the following circuit consisting of a battery, light bulbs, and switches: All the light bulbs are the same. The purpose of the light bulbs is to give you an idea of how much current flows through each part of the circuit. 1) Which switches must be closed in order to supply power only to light bulb X? Explain: X Y Z 1 6 5 2 3 4 A
