Irish dominated police departments Irish appeal became a focus in politics Irish hated British – played roll in politics Millions of Germans who flocked to US were liberal political refugees Schurz, a German liberal was a foe of slavery and public corruption, and contributed to the elevation of American political life German appeal became a focus in politics “Know-Nothing” party formed, being against the changes in the religious area of the country embargo of war of 1812 encouraged home manufacture Federal Government builds Cumberland Road with federal money Gold age of Navy came in 1840’s and 50’s E Much land was ruined by tobacco crops Tapped beavers, sea otters, and Bison to manufacture for East Mid 1800’s population continued to double every quarter-century Urban growth exploded Potato Famine of 1840’s caused many to flee from Ireland to US Most immigrants received low-end jobs such as building railroads Irish and blacks competed for work Millions of German farmers moved to US Many people hated the immigrants After much reform, people began to rely on immigrants as economical expansionists Industrial revolution spread to US and US was bound to become an industrial
