BIO 104 BIOLOGY II: GROWTH AND HEREDITY Winter Term 08-09 Meshagae Hunte-Brown, Ph. D.  Office: 103 Stratton Hall Phone: 215-895-2064                 Office Hours :   T 5-6 PM (and by appointment) Textbook :    Biology: Concepts and Connections  Campbell  et al.  6 th  Edition, Benjamin  Cummings - Publisher  Course Description :   BIO 104 is designed to introduce you to basic concepts in the  fields of growth and heredity. In this course we will discuss the principles underlying  genetics, gene expression, heredity, development and biotechnology. Where appropriate,  we will discuss the ethical and social issues surrounding gene cloning, gene therapy,  bioterrorism and other related topics. We will also discuss some of the major energy  harvesting metabolic pathways that are ultimately responsible for fueling growth,  specifically cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Overall Goals :   Upon completion of this course, it is anticipated that you have a basic  understanding of the energy pathways in living cells. You will be able to explain and  discuss the basic laws of genetics, understand the role played by the environment in the  phenotypic expression of a characteristic, and understand and be able to explain the
