DeGrossi 1 Luke DeGrossi Traditions in Conversation Mark Shiffman 23 September 2007 Comparison of “The Tale of Qamar al-Zaman” and the Speech of Aristophanes In both the speech of Aristophanes and “The Tale of Qamar al-Zaman”, there is a shared theme that love is thought to be a part of basic human nature. In his speech, Aristophanes envisions love as something engraved into the prenatal human heart by the ancient godly hands of Apollo and Zeus. The entire concept behind this ideology is that ultimate happiness cannot be attained until the heart’s thirst for fulfillment is quiesced by another individual’s love. As Qamar awakes from his enchanted sleep, he is filled with anger and rage upon discovering that Budur is no longer present and he finds himself “anguishing with passion, depressed, sleepless, emaciated in body and pallid in color” ( Arabian Nights II , “The Tale of Qamar al-Zaman”, pg. 188). In China, an enraged Budur is further provoked when a nurse swears that the midnight romance never happened. Budur “draws a sword, strikes the nurse with it, and kills her” ( Arabian Nights II , “The Tale of Qamar al-Zaman”, pg. 189). Budur is no cold-blooded murderer, though, just as Qamar will not be taking any psychotropic medication anytime soon. Their actions and feelings are evoked by love, not psychiatric turmoil, but sometimes, it can be difficult to differentiate between the two, because at times, love is madness.

DeGrossi 2 As Aristophanes said, “the way to make the human race happy is to give love its true fulfillment: let every one find his own darling, and so return to his original nature”
