Welcome to Week 6! Change initiatives often flounder because not enough attention is given to crafting a vision and the  communication strategy. This week focuses on the importance of a sound communication strategy for  initiating change. The best change plan in the world will be undermined without a well-conceived and  executed change communication strategy designed to inform, educate, involve, and motivate people to  perform and behave in ways consistent with the change project.  When addressing this week on change communication, we make five assumptions: 1. Communication is a key component during each phase of the change process. 2. Communication is an essential tool for motivating employees, for overcoming resistance to change, for  conveying the benefits and obstacles to change, and for giving employees a stake in the process. 3. Communication is a tool that is often used poorly or thoughtlessly. To the degree that communication is  used poorly in organizations, it confuses people. It makes them angry, and it feeds whatever skepticism or  cynicism employees feel about the motives of the people who lead them. This can worsen employee fears  and make them more resistant to the change project. 4. People need to understand the vision if change is to have any chance of success. 5. There is an effective way to communicate change. Effective communication is one of the most critical components of the change process. Developing a  vision for change and communicating that vision are critical parts of the change process. In Week 6, we  will analyze the key elements of a communication strategy. If there is a common thread when dealing with  change, it is the importance of effective communication: a clear and consistent message that works  toward a common understanding. Week 6: Communicating the Change - Objectives Print This Page G Given that developing a vision for change and communicating that vision is a critical part of the  change process, analyze key elements of vision development and communication strategy.
