COMS 3302-5-Putnam Writing Business Messages Chapter 5 Adapting to Your Audience Establishing a Good Relationship and Being Sensitive to  Your Audience : Use of the      “You”      Attitude     —normally good since it expresses a message in the audience’s interest and  needs.  Avoid if assigning blame…and don’t overdo it with You. Be  Polite/Maintain a Standard of Etiquette —you can feel any way you wish, but when words come  your mouth (or word processor) you are responsible for them.  Writing requires more tact and thought  than do oral presentations (no immediate feedback available for written messages).  The minute we  let our anger emerge in our communication is the same time the receiver starts to amount a defense  to what you said.  We erect a wall and often stop listening.
