Chapter Five. General characteristics of the: a- Terrestrial planets. b- Jovian planets. Try to relate facts. Ask yourself questions like: Which planet has the highest surface temperature ? and why? Which is the largest terrestrial planet, Jovian planet? Why are the outer planets larger than the terrestrial planets? What produces the magnetic field of the planets? Escape speed: Relation between the escape speed from a planet, surface temperature and atmosphere of a planet. Titan is a moon of Saturn, is similar to Mercury in mass and size. Mercury does not have any atmosphere but Titan does. Explain why this is possible. The escape velocity from a planet's surface depends upon ( see page 82) a. your mass and the planet's mass. b. your mass and the planet's radius. c. the planet's mass and radius. d. your mass and the planets orbital period. e. the planet's mass and orbital period. Identify the following objects: Magnetic Field of planets and stars and the dynamo effect. The solar wind and the magnetosphere of Earth. Space debris: Asteroids, comets, meteorites and meteors. Are all the known asteroids in the asteroid belt? Explain.
