Chapter 4 Abilities and Disabilities 1. What is g? - Spearman suggested that there is ONE mental attribute, which he called g, or general intelligence, that is used to perform any mental test, but that each test also requires some specific abilities in addition to g. - Individual vary in both general intelligence and specific abilities, and that together these factors determine performance on mental tasks. - General plus specific abilities theory is Carroll’s work identifying a new broad abilities( 70 abilities ) 5. What is Gardener’s view of intelligence and his position on g? - Theory of multiple intelligence, there are at least eight separate intelligences Logical mathematical Linguistics musical Spatial Body-kinesthetic interpersonal intrapersonal naturalist - Intelligence is the ability to solve problems and create products or outcomes that are valued by a culture - Intelligence has a biological basis. Intelligence is a biological and psychological potential; that potential is capable of being realized to a greater or lesser extent as a consequence of the experiment. - Gardner does not deny the existence of a general ability, but he does question how useful g is as an explanation for human achievements. 6. What are the elements of Sternberg’s theory of intelligence? - Triarchic theory of intelligence is a cognitive process approach to understanding intelligence. - Sternberg prefers the term successful intelligence in order to stress that intelligence is more than what is measured by mental abilities test – intelligence is about success in life.
