Wisdom – Chapter 22 1. Purpose of Wisdom Books (Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs) a. The stress of the wisdom books is, “Think” b. “The wisdom books start with a theological basis & then use the salvation story as a foundation on which to build a practical theology for living a day-to-day godly life in a complicated world” c. Imperatives: i. Listen ii. Look iii. Think iv. Reflect d. Purpose: Develop character in the reader e. Strong, practical tone 2. Big Picture a. “The 4 books balance each other theologically, & any one of them read out of the context of the others can be easily misunderstood.” b. “Basically, Proverbs presents the rational, ordered norms of life, while the other three books present the exceptions & limitations to the rational, ordered approach to life.” c. The Basic Approach to Life (Proverbs) i. Rational ordered norms of life ii. It describes things that are typically true 1. i.e. – If you work hard, you will prosper d. Exception 1: The Suffering of the Righteous (Job)
