Vietnam grew out of a Cold War mentality, one hard to fathom between political generations . The Viets were a South China tribe that pushed southward, conquering Vietnam by 1800 while fighting the Chinese on their north. Viets and Chinese were always enemies. From the 17th to 19th centuries, with missionaries in the lead, French colonialism took over. The Vietnamese remained highly nationalistic, and many hated the French. The United States tried to stem Vietnamese communism by setting up a separate South Vietnam, something the Accords never envisioned. The U.S. supported an antiCommunist nationalist, Ngo Dinh Diem, who became a dictatorial president in Saigon. In the late 1950s, guerrilla activity began anew with the Vietcong
