1 Chapter 1 Measurement In this chapter we will explore the following concepts: 1. Measurement of a physical parameter 2. Units, Systems of units 3. Basic Units in Mechanics 4. Changing units 5. Significant figures 2 Physics is a fundamental science that studies the interaction of matter and energy. Physics is best described in the language of math . An equation is worth 10,000 words! An equation tells a story. 3 The units for length, mass, and time (as well as a few others), are regarded as base SI units . These units are used in combination to define additional units for other important physical quantities such as force and energy. 4 SI units meter (m): unit of length kilogram (kg): unit of mass second (s): unit of time 1.0 m = 3.3 ft., 100 m is a little longer than a football field. Fortunately, there area no such things as metric seconds! 1.0 kg weighs 2.2 lbs. on Earth
