Spartas 1 This Is War One of the key issues we hear in this Presidential race is that of the war in Iraq. The question of whether or not the United States should have intervened has existed since the beginning. In 2004 a movie, This Is War, was produced. The movie examined the experiences of some soldiers during their time in Iraq. Although the movie appears to attempt a liberal stand regarding the war it fails in this aspect and comes off as being more informational than radical. The song played at the open and close of the film is the most definitive evidence of the attempt at a radical stance. The title of the movie and that of the song are the same, however the messages are different. Smile Empty Soul’s “This Is War” clearly provides a critical stance regarding war with the phrase “I’ll blow your fucking head off, for my country” ( This Is War ). The entire song carries a tone of disgust in regard to the way soldiers go about giving people freedom. It makes note of the idea that soldiers become robots who merely follow the instruction they are given with the phrase “Our leaders have a plan, I'd only kill if it's for them” ( This Is War ). The chorus, which is the majority of the song, also mimics the idea that the actions of a soldier become normal and emotionless as repetition occurs. The lyrics also suggest that destruction and terror comes with soldiers. Phrases such as “kick your door in” and “blow your fucking head off”
