The Harlem Children’s Zone Project What? o The Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) is a non-profit organization that is aimed at ending "the cycle of generational poverty" through a program o In 1997 the Harlem Children’s Zone Project was launched. It targets a specific geographic area in Harlem with a number of services children Who? o Why? o The chief problem being addressed is that of the racial-achievement gap An achievement gap in education is defined as a significant difference in academic performance between different groups of people In the case of the Harlem Children’s Zone Project those who being targeted are those students who come from a poverty stricken (generally minority) population found in Harlem Studies have shown that the Harlem Children’s Zone Project is actually closing the achievement gap! How? o The Harlem Children’s Zone Project takes children through a series of programs starting with infancy and continuing through college o There are two tracks: one consisting of 1200 children who go through the Promise Academy Charter Schools and the other consisting of children not attending the Promise Academies who live within the Zone and are served by a variety of programs occurring outside of school Baby College A 9-week workshop targeted towards expectant parents Teaches important skills relevant for children ages infant through three o Ex. Reading is stressed, the right way to discipline In two years 870 people graduated from it This is important because early-childhood is key in the
