Lesson 5, Preparing Your Application for Approval by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) When you publicly share classroom data in a paper or presentation, it becomes R esearch, and not just information to help you as a teacher. This means you must have permission granted through the IRB, an official group that makes sure that you are not putting a human subject at risk and that you will protect confidentiality. Because you will be using a fairly standard special education procedure and because you are addressing a behavior or skill that is identified on the student's IEP, we can ask for this permission immediately through an application for exempt research. Your application must be submitted to me and I will send it on to the IRB. It must contain contact information and signatures by all the researchers on your team. I will keep your approved form in a locked file cabinet in my office. The application for Exempt research requires a general description of the setting and participant with whom you will work, the problem behavior or skill deficit you will try to remediate, and a brief description of your intervention. You need to add this information to the prepared form follows. Be sure you explain in non-technical, simple language what you plan to do. Also describe what your reward system will be. Here is what a completed IRB exempt application looks like. You will change the italicized print that is in red to your study's specifications.

Review this sample, then copy just the IRB form to a new Word document without these instructions. Personalize your electronic copy with your information, leave the signature lines blank, select all and change the font to black. Submit your new version to me via BlackBoard assignments and I will give you feedback. Meet with your group to compare your corrected IRB feedback and make one perfect final version with the appropriate corrections. Print out one copy of your final IRB application for the group, have everyone in your group sign it, and turn in the hard copy to me for my signature and I will send it on to the IRB.
