Karina Santana March 4, 2009 Ms. Visalia Washington Heights located in uptown Manhattan, also known as Platano city. It’s a place where a large amount of Dominicans live. I am Dominican, and I have lived there my whole life. There is always the misconception that there are always shootouts and drug dealers on the street, but it’s not true. In fact there are drug dealers, but walking down the street what you take notice on are the men sitting in the corner playing dominoes, kids running around and women arguing with their husbands. Personally, I am proud to call Washington heights my neighborhood; it’s a reminder that my culture will always be around even in another country. To get to Washington Heights I normally take the A or the 1, and get off at 168 th street. As I get off the train the first thing I usually see are police officers; patrolling the station making sure that there are no illegal things taking place and checking the bags on those that appear suspicious. As you walk up the ten- stairs the fist thing you hear are people arguing. Such as, “por que estas mansanas estan tan carras” meaning why are these apples so expensive.
