Alexander Thompson November 13 th 2009 Art History paper on: Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alps Page1 Reshaping History and All That It Means At some point in your life, it is important that you take time out to discover all of the historical events that occurred in the past, weather whether through film, newspaper articles, or even art. The Brooklyn Museum hosts many of the world’s most famous pieces of artwork. As you enter through the clear glass doors and look to your left, you are immediately captivated by a magnificent canvas painting clearly much larger than you are. The artwork that you just can’t cannot take your eyes off of is called, Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alps , and was created by , - Kehinde Wiley. The painting is actually an oil on canvas work created recently in 2005 and it measures 108 x 108 inches. As you continue to look at the painting, you start to analyze it even further. You see a light skinned African American man on a white horse. He is wearing a white bandana around his head, accompanied by a yellow shawl blowing in the wind. He also has on a pair of army green pants, followed by tan Timberland boots. As you look at him, he stares right back at you. He portrays an image of authority holding the horse as it stands on its two hind legs at the edge of a cliff. Now that you have studied the painting and all of its aspects, you take an interest in learning more about the artist of this masterpiece.
