Because of some other interests that Ralston Purina had in Ever Ready Battery
and Purina pet foods units, the company decided to spin off its cereal, Beech-Nut baby food,
cracker, cookie, resort and coupon redemption businesses.
The units formed a new independent
company, which is now known as Ralcorp Holdings Inc.
The spin off was only supposed to
benefit the cereal business, but Ralcorp also became the recipient of Ralston’s Colorado ski
resorts and the coupon redemption business.
The spin off was tax free to Ralston Purina
shareholders, who received one share of Ralcorp for every three shares of Ralston Purina Group
stock they owned (The Carriage House Companies, Inc.).
Today, through internal growth and
strategic acquisitions, Ralcorp has become the leading producer of private label or store brand
foods, and a major producer of foodservice products (Ralcorp Holdings-Investor Relations).
