Problem 1 What is the average number of valence electrons per atom on the following compound: CdAg 2 Ge 4 Ga 2 Se 4 P 2 ? [Answer in number] Ans: Cd provides 2 electrons, Ag 1, Ge 4, Ga 3, Se 6 and P 5. The total number of electrons is therefore 3+2×1+4×4+2×3+4×6+2×5=60 for 15 atoms which gives an average of 4 electrons per atom. In theory this compound could form a semiconductor. Problem 2 Which of the following ternary compound is likely to form a semiconductor with tetravalent tetrahedral structure? [Answer A, B, C, D] A- CuInSe B- Zn 2 InTe C- CdGeP 2 D- ZnAlAs 2 Ans: Only CdGeP 2 has an average of 4 valence electrons per atom. Cd has 2 electrons on the 5s, Ge 4 on the 4s4p and two P have 5 on the 3s3p. That is a total of 16 electrons for 4 atoms, hence 4 electrons each. Problem 3 For what value of x will the compound Cd x Te form a tetrahedral semiconductor? [Answer in number]
