Chapter 1 Review. 1. The general themes that connect biology a. Evolution- Descent with modification this accounts for the ability of life to match its environments. Remember it is the environment that selects among a set of genes that already exist, the environment does not make or force the genes to exist. b. Emergent properties of biological hierarchy i. Know the higherarchy 1. biosphere 2. ecosystem 3. community 4. population 5. organism 6. organ system 7. organ 8. tissue (This is the level that we study in cell bio) 9. cell 10. organelle 11. molecule 12. atom ii. New properties emerge as a result of interactions among components at a lower level 1. An example during development is the location of the cell not only the contents of its genome that determines what it will become c. Organisms interact with their environments exchanging matter and energy i. What happens to matter ii. What happens to energy (usually lost as heat) iii. Most energy comes ultimately from the sun and is converted to chemical bond or other forms of energy that is exchanged by cells. d. Structure and function are correlated at all levels of biological organization. i.
