Metabolism is the collection of chemical reactions that occur in a cell. ii. To perform metabolic the cell requires enzymes 1. Catabolic break down molecules releasing energy 2. Anabolic build molecules requiring energy iii. Each is required by the other iv. Bioenergetics is how organisms transf0rm energy. b. Forms of energy (capacity to cause change) i. Kinetic energy is the movement of matter (Heat) ii. Potential energy is energy stored by location or arrangement of matter c. Laws of Energy transformation i. Energy is neither created or destroyed it is transferred or transformed ii. Spontaneous changes (no outside input of energy require an increase in entropy of the universe) 2. The free energy change of a reaction indicates if the reaction can occur spontaneously a. Free energy change is directly related to change in enthalpy and the change in entropy. i. For a reaction to be spontaneous the system must lose energy or become more disordered or both. b.
