FINAL EXAM – DEFERRED STANDING WHAT IS AN ACADEMIC CONCESSION OR DEFERRED STANDING (SD)? A student who is affected by illness, accident or family affliction should immediately consult with UBC Student Health Services, Counseling Services, or another healthcare professional. In such cases, the student may apply for academic concession. Academic concession will be considered in cases where the illness or affliction is shown to have created a serious impediment to the student’s ability to complete course requirements. Academic concession may include: A deferral of a midterm exam Students may request, directly from the course instructor, a deferral of a mid-term test/examination or of other work that is due during the term. A deferral of a final examination, or other course work. A standing of “SD” (standing deferred) is placed on the student’s academic record to indicate that the student has been granted a deferral for a missed final exam or outstanding work. Sessional averages do not include courses with SD standing. Averages are recalculated when the SD is removed. Deferred Standing and Academic Concession Requests must be submitted to Arts Academic Advising Services in Buchanan A201 no later than ten working days after the end of the examination period.
