Critical Reading – (critical summary) - 15 points 1.5 hours Short passage: Write your reaction to passage in 1-3 paragraphs Critical summary notes: write in your own words, avoid paraphrase, demonstrate synthesis (formulate the writer’s ideas in your own words), express ideas precisely at a reasonable level of abstraction, capture the position of article, explain how the author develops his/her arguments. Capture structure and ideas first! Critical writing - (Essay) - 15 points 1.5 hours (5-6 pages) Two topics: Topic 1: Write an essay addressing the following statement. “ Today in 2010, children exercise significantly more power inside their families and in their dealings with their parents than they did in the past.” Do you see any significant trends in child- rearing practices either in North America or in a country or culture with which you are familiar? If so, how do we interpret these trends?
