Genetically Modified Foods: Pros Outweigh Cons by Vonnie Goodloe Mary Nipp ENG101 September 10, 2011 Vonnie Goodloe Mary Nipp ENG 101 10 September 2011 One of the greatest debates of our time is the debate over genetically modified foods, also known as GM foods. Some say that it is perfectly safe for human consumption while others disagree. Genetically modified foods provide more benefits to our environment, our economy, our health, and our livelihood than that of organic foods. Since the benefits of genetically modified foods outweigh those of unaltered foods, it is clear that GM foods are the way of the present and the future. Genetically altered foods can be found throughout history, dating back to before the 1900’s. However, it is only in the last few decades that GM foods have become mainstream. Today 60% to 70% of foods found on grocery store shelves are said to contain some genetically modified ingredient, experts say. One of the first foods to be approved for commercial
