Family Situation

Jean-Robert’s Mom died before he can remember

His Father had a friend take care of him because of his embarrassment of his
son’s conception

Florence, his Father’s friend whom he called maman, took care of him and
began calling him Bobby and gave him her last name, Cadet
d.
Florence didn’t spend any extra money or attention on Bobby

She didn’t even take him to his First Communion

Lifestyle
a.
Treated as a slave
•
Slept under table on mat
•
Watched TV from outside the back window
•
Ate everyone else’s leftovers from the table
b.
Severely punished for the smallest mistake or mishap
•
He was beaten unconscious for accidentally dropping a glass
•
Florence struck him with her sharp heel and made a bad cut over his
eye for losing a dollar because he had a hole in his pocket
c.
Lived in constant fear of punishment
•
Jean-Robert was a frequent bed-wetter and often awoke to being
beaten with a broomstick by Florence
d.
Moved multiple times to live other people
•
Florence and her son and daughter-in-law moved to New York City
and Jean-Robert was sent to live Florence’s Mom
•
From there he moved to Florence’s niece’s hut where her sugar daddy
