Lecture 4 Recall: Colour is for daytime warning and black and white is used by night time animals. Animals will try to warn before the release their chemicals (ie. Skunk) - Black and white = aposematic at night - Colour in the day, better stay away - Monarch caterpillars sequester their poison from plants. Sequester Cardiac Glycoside (Terpenoid) poison from milkweeds (heart poison). - Fireflies have poisons as well, but not all fireflies have poison but can sequester them from other fireflies. Therefore, sequester means to get a poison from another source. o Photuris fireflies sequester steroidal toxin by going to a male fireflies ( Photinus) that are blinking to mate and will fake a yes response of a female and then eat the male firefly. Called Aggressive Mimicry - Chemicals can be stored and released in a variety of body parts. o Osmetaria o Can release chemicals out their mouths - ie. Sawfly larvae.
