Lecture 5 Mobbing is a behaviour defence or Pre-emptive Defence. Group Defence – White-tailed deer Yard in winter (where gather in winter) – safety in numbers - Some animals use body guards. Insects on plants. Ants will feed on sap called honeydew. o Ex. Carpenter ants guarding aphids - Cotton tail rabbit run away when hunted. They zigzag when they run away. They also stick their tail up in the air. They do this b/c to distract the predator or to tell the predator that they see them. Since most predators rely on stealth for hunting and the white tail is a flag to warn the predator that they have been spotted. Vigilance - Snakes have no external ears but can sense vibrations - Being alert and scanning for danger o Adaptations for scanning: Olfactory = nose Auditory = ear Visual = eyes - Large external pinnae (Ears) capture sound and magnify sound o Can rotate their ears to scan the environment while eating and don’t have to move their head o Beavers will stop what it is doing to scan the area, but they have small ears.
