Selected Answer: “The contingency theory of leadership is the theory that effective leadership occurs when managers adopt a leadership approach that matches the characteristics of their employees and the work setting. The two main work-situation contingencies in the contingency theory of leadership first relates to the nature of the job. Some jobs require the employee to perform many different tasks, each requiring a different kind of skill. Considerable thought and decision making are needed on a continuing basis if the job is to be done well. The second work-situation contingency in the contingency theory of leadership is the level of cohesiveness present in a team, and their ability to perform their task is directly affected by the behavior of the other team members. It is also affected by the quality of the relationship among team members.” When deciding which leadership approach to choose whether it is a directive, supportive, participative, or an achievement-oriented leadership approach depends on the individual you are dealing with, the type of situation you are addressing, and the type of work related environment you are currently utilizing. The importance in selecting an effective leadership approach, “determines a leader’s effectiveness in increasing work motivation, promoting positive performance, enhancing work behaviors and attitudes.” Jones, Gareth R.
