Force: A force is a push or pull . An object at rest needs a force to get it moving ; a moving object needs a force to change its velocity . 83

Newton’s First Law (Law of Inertia): Every object continues in its state of rest, or of uniform velocity in a straight line, as long as no net force acts on it. (Galileo) Newton’s first law is valid in inertial reference frames . We usually assume that reference frames fixed on the Earth are inertial frames. Any other frame that moves with constant velocity with respect to an inertial frame is also an inertial frame. Rotating and accelerating frames are not inertial frames. The tendency of an object to maintain its state of rest or of uniform motion in a straight line is called inertia . 84
